Why is it important?

Once the choice of IT equipment and its daily usage practices are well established, changing them can be difficult. Usage inertia is therefore significant it should be a priority matter at the start of the project.

Three key steps to take

1️⃣ Choice of Equipment

• Use secondhand/reconditioned equipment.
• Replace personal and professional phones with dual SIM or dual number options.
• Prioritize environmental labels (e.g. Blue Angel, TCO, EPEAT) for IT equipment.

2️⃣ Equipment Usage

• Extend the lifespan of IT equipment through leasing and upgradeable hardware.

Extending the lifespan of laptops from 2.5 to 3.5 years can reduce the greenhouse gas emissions impact of the fleet of computer terminals by 37% (source ADEME, climate, air, energy key figures, 2018).

• Unplug devices or set them to revert to sleep mode after three minutes.

3️⃣ Reduce the Carbon Footprint of your Digital and Internet Technology Use

• Website: Calculate the carbon footprint of your website here and make optimizations here.
• Emails: Unsubscribe from spam, avoid large attachments, remove email signatures with logos, regularly delete emails, etc.
• Internet: Default to a positive impact search engine (Ecosia, Lilo...).
• Software: Uninstall unnecessary software.
